Music is truly a powerful force and influences our lives daily. Whether working out, driving, celebrating, or experience hard times, music can be used to help boost or change our moods. It has even been proven to cause cognitive recognition, which causes certain songs and sounds to recall specific events or moments and evoke the emotions attached to them. Amazing, right?
What’s even more astounding are all the ways that music impacts children emotionally as well as socially, as they are still in their earliest and most foundational stages of mental and emotional development.
In 2017 Frontiers In Psychology presented a case study on the impact of music on the emotional development of children using the Orff and Kodaly methods, which are both major philosophies used to create the Kindermusik curricula! These methods introduce children to concepts of music through activities we utilize in every Kindermusik class like singing, listening or movement, and playing percussion instruments. The results concluded that two out of three children who participated in these methods displayed a measurable increase in their empathy and awareness of other’s feelings and emotions!
But there’s more! Here are more ways that Kindermusik helps children with social-emotional development.
Self Reflection/ Awareness
Kindermusik’s guided musical activities allow children to get in touch with their feelings and reactions to particular words, songs, and sounds, providing a keen sense of self-awareness, which enhances a child’s executive functioning skills. These skills include self-control, memory, and one’s ability to see things in a new way, think outside the box, and become better problem solvers!
Interpersonal Awareness
Because Kindermusik’s curriculum is group-based, our classes provide a great example of what healthy interactions with one another look like! Through the structured learning environment, simply following directions encourages children to focus, respectfully take instruction and manage impulses, which even further promotes self-control. By taking turns, and sharing, children become increasingly aware of and in tune to the needs of others, leading to more empathy and kindness. These are all pivotal and fundamental parts of healthy, thriving, relationships with caregivers, teachers, and peers!
Creative Expression
As students explore musical instruments, sing, dance, and come up with their own unique ways to interact and respond to songs, images, and other healthy stimuli, their sense of confidence, creativity and self expression is awakened!
Security
Because Kindermusik students attend each class with a parent or caregiver, there is an innate sense of safety and security in knowing they will be interacting with and close to someone they already know and love. And by default, those relationships are reinforced! Also, each of our classes begins with our “Hello” song, in which each child attending is included by name, which sets the tone that they are not only recognized and accepted, but celebrated too! This promotes a sense of community, inclusion, and security in the children that attend Kindermusik!
